Blue and Gold Banquet

Pack 1382 celebrates Scouting's Birthday every February.  This is one of our highlight events of the year.  Our Pack puts in a hearty effort to create a nice family banquet.  The Blue and Gold is also the first pack meeting where scouts who have earned their ranks, can receive their new badges.

The Blue and Gold banquet is the most exciting event on the Cub Scout calendar. It is the birthday celebration of Cub Scouting. Every family in the Pack can take part in its planning and execution. The banquet is held in February, as this is the anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America began in 1910 and Cub Scouting began twenty years later. The BLUE AND GOLD gets its name from the Cub Scout colors -- blue and gold.

Crossover, Advancement and Bobcat Ceremonies

What is Crossover?  It is our Webelos graduation ceremony in March (or April) where they "cross over" from a parent-led scouting program, Cub Scouts, to that of an boys'-led scouting program, the Boy Scouts.  We also host an Advancement Ceremony in May for the rest of our Cub Scouts, with a special emphasis on our Tiger Cubs.

The scouts and their families have put in a good effort to make their rank, so at the end of the scouting year, we take pride in congratulating all of them for their hard work.  These two ceremonies are special events to our pack!

In November, the Pack will host a Bobcat Investiture Ceremony, preferrably outdoors, where we formally induct our new members into our pack.

Service Projects

Fall Community Service Project @ JW Alvey Elementary - At the start of every school year, our scouts, leaders and parents help beautify our community elementary, our chartered organization. We pull weeds, trim the hedges, edge the sidewalks and curbs in the front and rear entrance areas of the school.

Leave No Trace Project - In October, the pack will take on the task of cleaning the entry area, parking lot, and the picnic grounds at Conway Robinson State Forest, before taking to the trails for a bike hike.

Scouting For Food
- The first Saturday in November of every year, our scouts gather as a pack to help distribute food bags to the community.  The purpose of this is to join in the greater scouting effort to help feed the needy with non-perishible goods for the upcoming holiday season.  The following Saturday scouts return to collect the donations and take them to a designated drop off assigned by our district.

Christmas Caroling - Our Pack usually goes out to the Gainesville Health & Rehab Center in Heritage Hunt.

Spring Community Service Project - This is an the Pack takes on every spring depending on where the need is.

Cub Scout Camping

Our Pack comes together twice a year to enjoy the group camping experience.  It is not expected that camping is for everyone in the pack, but those who come have a great time.  Our camping agenda comes complete with outdoor flag ceremonies, a pack hike, structured games, group chow over a campfire for dinner and breakfast, and fun-filled campfire program.  We top it all off with a "Scouts' Own" spiritual service to complete the camp-out on Sunday morning.

The Pack makes group camping reservations 12 months in advance to ensure not just the availability of the best possible dates, but the best group campgrounds for the lowest cost to the pack.  Our pack also tries its best to set up a two-night experience for those willing to self-pay for the extra night.

Hiking Stick Program

Each month our pack takes a 2 to 3 mile hike, varying in difficulty to a park within about one hour's drive from Haymarket.  Hikes during the school year are limited to about a total time of 3 to 3.5 hours, including the time for traveling to and from.  During the summer the pack takes day hikes which are about the same distance to hike, but are designed to be more challenging.  These will take roughly 2 more hours as the location are west in the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains.

In our hiking program, Scouts must earn their hiking sticks, as well as various awards based on the number of hikes and miles accrued.  The pack keeps a detailed log for every scout!  Awards vary from medallions, to hiking stick accessories to decorative animal claws and feathers.

Pack 1382's Hiking Stick Program promotes outdoor skills, environmental education, camaraderie, exercise, and the sense of adventure, with the added bonus of hiking miles carrying over to the Boy Scouts once scouts pass Webelos.
